Income Verification

Automated annual recalibration based on CRA tax filings. No manual application required after the initial enrollment in the OAS program.

Non-Taxable Status

GIS payments are excluded from taxable income calculations, preserving the net value of the benefit for lowest-income deciles.

Spousal Allowance

Extended benefits available for spouses aged 60-64 if the primary pensioner is eligible for GIS, ensuring household stability.

The Partial Exemption Logic

For the current fiscal year, the first $5,000 of employment or self-employment income is fully exempt from the GIS clawback calculation. This allows seniors to participate in the workforce without immediate reduction in their primary supplement.

Beyond the initial exemption, a partial exemption applies to the next $10,000 of earned income. Specifically, 50% of this amount is excluded, resulting in a total possible exemption of $10,000 on $15,000 of earnings.

Clawback Rate Specification

The standard reduction rate for GIS is 50 cents for every dollar of other income (excluding OAS and the exemptions mentioned above). However, complex interactions occur with RRSP withdrawals and CPP payments.

Single/Widowed Threshold
$21,624 (Annual)
Combined Couple Threshold
$28,560 (Annual)

Marital Status Variance

The GIS calculation shifts significantly based on marital status and whether the spouse is also an OAS pensioner. For couples where only one person receives OAS, the income threshold for eligibility is substantially higher than for single individuals, reflecting shared household expenses in high-cost regions like Calgary.
